Tutor mode is the default
Ask for an answer and the first response is a question: what have you tried? The lesson proceeds from your attempt, which also happens to be the fastest route to the actual misconception.
Assessment mode for schools
Institutions can turn on a mode that refuses to solve anything matching an active assignment, and logs the attempt for the teacher. Students see this clearly. It isn't surveillance by surprise.
Where we say no outright
- Writing an essay to be submitted as the student's own work
- Anything presented as an active timed exam question
- Medical, legal or financial advice dressed up as a study question
We'd rather be occasionally annoying than quietly complicit.
